BLADE Network Technologies Announces Patent Cross-License Agreement with IBM

Posted on April 21, 2009. Filed under: Technology |

SANTA CLARA, Calif., 20 April 2009 BLADE Network Technologies, Inc. (BLADE) today announced a patent cross-license agreement with IBM (NYSE: IBM).

Over the past three years, BLADE has been providing industry-first data center networking solutions for IBM including the first native 10 Gigabit Ethernet switch for IBM BladeCenter, the first top-of-rack switch for iDataPlex in massive Web 2.0-style data centers and cloud computing, and the first network virtualization solution that automates the enterprise data center for dynamic migration of virtual machines. BLADE currently delivers its embedded Ethernet switches for IBM BladeCenter under the “BNT” name and its top-of-rack RackSwitch data center switches for IBM’s iDataPlex and IBM System Cluster 1350.

“Licensing IBM patents will serve to accelerate BLADE’s development of leading-edge products in open unified computing, I/O virtualization, data center network provisioning and cloud networking,” said Vikram Mehta, President and CEO, BLADE Network Technologies.  “We are delighted that BLADE’s strategic relationship with IBM now includes a cross-licensing patent agreement, which will further enhance and extend the innovation which has made BLADE the trusted supplier of data center networking, virtualization and management solutions to over 300 of the Fortune 500.  We see this as an enhancement to the long-term relationship between BLADE and IBM.”

IBM’s patent cross-licensing agreement with BLADE Network Technologies supports the company’s commitment to balancing proprietary and open innovation,” said Dan Cerutti, general manager, IBM Intellectual Property Licensing. “Through this collaboration with BLADE, we can pursue new business opportunities and enable others to take advantage of the technologies they need to enable important data center projects.

Patent cross licenses support two of the basic reasons for granting patents – sharing information about new inventions – and giving companies greater freedom to innovate.

For the past 16 years, IBM has received more U.S. patents than any other company.  In 2008, IBM received 4,186 U.S. patents.  IBM holds more than 40,000 patents worldwide.  For more information on IBM, please visit www.ibm.com.

BLADE Network Technologies is the leading supplier of Gigabit and 10G Ethernet network infrastructure solutions that reside in blade servers and “scale-out” server and storage racks. BLADE’s new “Virtual, Cooler and Easier” RackSwitch family demonstrates the promise of “Rackonomics”— a revolutionary approach for scaling out data center networks to drive down total cost of ownership. The company’s customers include close to two-thirds of the Fortune 500 across 26 industry segments, and an installed base representing more than 250,000 network switches and over 5.5 million switch ports connecting more than 1,200,000 servers. Internet based cost-savings for SMBs

Posted on April 7, 2009. Filed under: Business Issues, Technology |

The Advantages of Saas

The internet offers great opportunities and cost savings for SMBs. In order for SMBs to take full advantage of the many online services offered, here are a few useful hints and tips.

  • Watch out for hidden charges. There’s an old saying that the man who gives away his product for free knows its value. While free services may be tempting, there are often hidden costs involved, particularly if the user goes over their usage limit..

Be sure you understand up-front what you’re paying for, what the limitations are, and how you will be invoiced each month. The little fees can add up quickly and negate any savings you were trying to achieve.

  • Assure you have complete independence. If additional software is required to support the internet service make sure you do not get tied in to the vendor or have expensive maintenance contracts to pay. Online fax services for example don’t need any additional on-board software or other measures to fax via the internet.

  • Research the company behind the service.  Stating the obvious –right? I’m always amazed at the number of companies we see who come to us because they got tied in to a “back street provider” and did not get the service promised. This sort of fly-by-night setup is not good or reliable enough for today’s competitive business. If you’re paying for an internet subscription or service, ensure the service you pay good money for has the capacity and reliability you require.

·       Check out the scalability. Look into the maximum amount of users the service can support. What you want to avoid is starting with one, and then having to change set-up as your business grows. Ideally, you should be able to go from one to one thousand without any disruption.

·       Confirm that help is available if needed. Make sure you can get support when you need it, preferably 24/7 support with a live person who knows the service and can help you solve problems quickly.

Internet fax service introduces customer requested features designed to further increase usability

UK, April 7, 2009 MyFax, the world’s fastest-growing internet fax service, today announced the release of its latest enhancements, which includes several new features that provide customers with increased productivity.  The added features, offered by the award-winning internet faxing solution, are based on MyFax customer feedback representing businesses of every size.

The new release of MyFax includes the ability to save commonly faxed documents within MyFax Central, the service’s web-interface. Additionally, contacts to whom a fax is sent can be automatically added to the Contact Book, a feature similar to many email programs. Both of these features save MyFax users time and increase productivity. Another time-saving feature, intended for customers with larger MyFax deployments, is the ability for account administrators to search and efficiently find users.

MyFax sends and receives faxes using an email account, removing the need for a dedicated phone line and fax machine. The service, which fully integrates with Microsoft Office, IBM Lotus Notes and ACT!, enables users to manage their fax communication and corresponding document management work flow more efficiently and at a lower cost than traditional fax servers or fax machines, regardless of physical location.

“These new enhancements make MyFax even more intuitive to use,” said Joseph Nour, CEO of Protus, the provider of MyFax. “We rely extensively on customer feedback for product improvements, and do our best to make sure we give our customers what they want. These enhancements are the latest example of that philosophy in action.”

The top new customer inspired features and enhancements include the ability to:

·        Save frequently faxed documents for easy retrieval

·        Automatically add new recipients to the Contact Book

·        Retrieve context sensitive help at MyFax Central

·        More efficiently locate users with search functionality on the Admin page

·        Generate enhanced activity reports for enterprise customers allowing admins to generate reports by billing code

MyFax offers an uncomplicated price structure. The basic service is £5 per month and includes 100 outbound and 200 inbound faxes and one year of fax storage. There is no setup fee and no hidden charges. MyFax pricing is based on usage.

MyFax recently earned its fourth straight #1 ranking Gold Award from TopTenREVIEWS, an internet publisher of expert technology and entertainment reviews seen by millions of consumers.
